Tsarskoye Selo, “the Imperial village” built in the 18th century as the summer residence of the Tsars, imitates the style of the Imperial Court in St. Petersburg. Renamed ‘Pushkin’ in 1937, the village contains two palaces of different styles, but the beauty of the interiors and the gardens are worth a visit. The preferred residence of Nicholas II, the palaces of Tsarskoye Selo are witnesses to the pomp of Imperial Russia as well as locations full of history.
You will start your tour in Catherine Palace, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A sumptuous palace with a blue facade and columns of white marble, Empress Elizabeth commissioned the Italian architect Rastrelli to create a marvelous exterior in honor of her mother. Your guide will lead through the interiors of the palace where you will discover the richness of the decorations. The history of the grand ballroom, characterized by gilding and mirrors, will be recounted to you by your guide, who will also offer anecdotes on the majestic room that was inspired by Versailles’ Ice Gallery. You will continue your tour in the Amber Room, considered lost since 1945, but reconstructed identically to the original. You will finish your tour of the Catherine Palace in the gardens and parks, where the pavilions and gondolas of the large lake possess a certain serenity.
Unfortunately the Alexander Palace is currently under restoration and so close to visits.
With its two Imperial palaces and gardens, Tsarskoye Selo is part of an essential tour for any amateur of history or architecture.
