The Gulag History Museum was founded in 2001 by Anton V. Antonov-Ovseyenko - a famous historian, publicist and public figure, who passed himself through Stalin's camps just because he was the son of "an enemy of the Nation".
Your visit through the central exposition of the museum will give you essential information on the Soviet forced-labor camps, commonly called Gulag. You’ll explore the history and evolution of the Gulag, from the necessary conditions to its creation in 1930s to its closure in 1950s, after Stalin's death. Thus, you’ll understand the most disastrous consequences of the USSR’s repressive policy. You’ll also learn about the role of the Gulag, whether about administration or economy in the USSR. The museum mainly aims to shine a light on this dark page of history, so that we would not rewrite the errors of the past.
In the course of the tour, you will see items linked to the fate of people who became prisoners of the Gulag camps, a number of them dying in detention. In particular, you’ll observe findings from contemporary expeditions to the places of activity of the former labor camps in different regions of Russia and former USSR.
This tour is a must do during your stay in Moscow, if you want to know more about life and politics in the USSR, the reality of what Gulag was and about the victims of the USSR ruthless repressive policy.
