Founded in 1591 by Czar Feodor, son of Ivan the Terrible, the Donskoy Monastery is today still a major religious center for Russians wishing to reconnect with Orthodoxy. The Monastery was founded by Czar Feodor to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Russian army over the Crimean Tatars. As well, the Donskoy Monastery is characterized by its opposition to the Soviet regime. Being the refuge of the “last” Patriarch Tikhon until 1925, the conservation place of the fragments of the original Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, ordered destroyed by Stalin in 1931, and the burial place of many political and religious opponents of the Communist regime, gives the Donskoy Monastery its unique characteristics.
Your guide will introduce you to this Baroque monastic ensemble and will allow you to grasp a new facet of the Russian soul. You will begin your visit by the chapel of the monastery, where are icons and fragments of the first Cathedral of Christ the Savior are found on the painted walls and vaults. You will continue your visit by continuing toward the gardens of the monastery and its wall, before heading towards the cemetery, the highlight of your visit.
Whether for its cemetery or for its pink chapel with black cupolas, the Donskoy Monastery is an escape off the beaten track from other tourists.
